The founder of the Kumon Method, Toru Kumon, says children are born to love learning; if children can self-learn, moving forth at their own pace, they will gain self-confidence and become more thoughtful and friendly. Student Chan, having the big dimples on her face and filling with curiosity in her eyes, patiently waiting for the start of the interview…
Children who study Kumon usually have a strong belief of persistence. A Primary 5 student, Zhou is not an exception. She studies Kumon Math, Kumon Chinese and Kumon English (EFL) altogether. The interview was set at the backstage of the Kumon Shanghai Advanced Student Honor Roll Ceremony. In the dressing room for drama actors, the mirrors on the wall reflect the shadow of Student Wang, which is a slightly thin but very powerful figure.

“My child learns Peking opera and fencing, which take up 15 hours a week. At school, she is advancing to a higher grade. Kumon study plays a significant role in helping her lay a firm foundation and enabling her to have spare time to participate in extra-curricular activities. The “self-learning” that Kumon advocates allows her to make plans on her own.” Ren’s mother said.
The influence of Kumon on children still remains after completion of the study. This time we are going to share with you about Lee, who obtained excellent results and got admitted to Enrichment Stream in Theoretical Physics program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Seeing those little smiley faces and hearing their unexpected but amazing sharing are the most enjoyable part of interviewing with excellent students. However, this interview is so unique and it left me with a great impression which is from an excellent student’s parent. After the interview, my notes are full of what the daddy said. Kumon always emphasizes the importance of parents because the time children learn at home is much longer than at education center. Therefore, it is particularly important for parents to understand the Kumon Method, encourage their children and supervise them at home. A summary of this father’s speech may give you all some good references! Let us introduce our today’s spotlight --- Daddy Lao!
Four years ago when he started learning with Kumon, as Ng remembers he could get stickers after finishing classwork. “At that time, I wanted Ultra-man and Crayon Shin-chan stickers.” As he has developed the study habit, Ng experienced the joy of self-learning and acquiring knowledge on his own; he seemed to ask for more. Ng would request for more homework during long holidays. One day, during the Chinese New Year holiday,
Like many students, at the beginning of studying Kumon, it took time for Ng to adapt to the way of Kumon learning, as repetitive pattern and progress-in-small-steps worksheets. She felt bored that some contents seemed to repeat over and over again. However, she gradually developed the habit of studying Kumon every day. As she has made progress, she started to learn new contents. With the hints from the example questions, she solved the problems by herself and received 100 marks from her worksheets. This sense of achievement arouses her interest in learning.
A little boy sitting in front of us, Xiangli looks quite playful. Besides saying out loud his name, he gave us the most specific introduction of himself, “I am from Class 6, student number 17, sitting at the third seat in the third row.” Xiangli is an energetic child, who love running outside the classroom. However, he behaves himself well during class. His academic performance is excellent as well. Xiangli’s mother believes that it is the outcome from learning Kumon. “Learning Kumon on regular daily basis builds his concentration.”
Luo recalled the most unforgettable memory in Kumon study is the time she studied level B of Kumon Math. At that time, she had gone through a lot of repetition that was mainly about addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers. During the time of this “bottleneck”, Luo even took a “break” from Kumon for a month. Luo thinks back on those difficult time, and she believes that “overcome” those trials and then everything is going to be all right, it is just like how she studies Math at school.
